Served with Eggs by Andrew Taylor

contact the bakers
'is your bread vegetarian?'
not as daft a question
as you'd imagine

our bread contains
flour water yeast and salt

mainline railway terminus
the romance of the station
remarkably there is no
smell of freshly baked bread

despite the quality French bakers

unlike our 1980s 2.00 am walks
from the city to north Liverpool
as we reached the bakers
at the Black Bull bread fresh

from the oven
cash in hand

journeys northbound from
the metropolis to the port
the eastpak must contain
bread to be sliced covered with

butter possibly served with eggs
the following morning

Andrew Taylor is a poet and editor of erbacce and erbacce Press
